Can One Person Make a Difference?

There’s a lot we can do as individuals, especially when we are connected to one another in a strong, tightly woven network.

We take inspiration from the fishnet pattern in the iconic Palestinian keffiyeh, which represents Palestinians’ connection to the sea and to one another. One person may struggle to make a noticeable difference, but together – across bodies and borders, nationalities and ways of life – we can change the world.

Building networks of relationship, justice, and hope within and beyond the systems of harm that hold so much power in the world is a lifelong process that begins each day. Generations past have created change in this way, and billions of people around the world are engaged in these kinds of actions on a daily basis.

Besides making a noticeable impact on those who benefit financially from genocide, we know that economic divestment also strengthens communities by helping us understand how we might replace our reliance on the system with resilient relationships of mutual support.

By replacing your big-box purchases with shopping at small local businesses – or opting-out of trading U.S. currency entirely and trading goods and services with others in your community – you not only influence the broader economy but help build a better one.

Learning to take better care of, and receive care from, each other is a life-changing outcome of its own. We know it’ll make a difference for Palestine, too.
